A Packers player makes a prediction that promptly and horribly backfires
|Jaire Alexander, a Packers cornerback, made a bold prediction that promptly backfired.
The Green Bay Packers were having a good time heading into Week 14, and why not? They had won three straight games, including a tremendous Thanksgiving victory over the Detroit Lions, and they followed it up with a huge primetime victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. After a 2-5 start, the Packers were suddenly 6-6 and in the final NFC Wild Card berth. With no remaining games against teams with winning records, Green Bay appeared to be a lock to make the playoffs and possibly compete for the division title.
That’s when Packers CB Jaire Alexander went overboard. The outspoken defender is never shy about speaking up, and this week was no exception.
“I’m not going to claim to be a prophet, but I predicted it.””I said we were going to win,” Alexander told Ryan Wood of USA TODAY.
To be clear, he’s been saying this for quite some time, but he reinforced it this week.
The Packers fell despite being 5.5-point favorites over the 4-8 Giants, dropping their overall record to 6-7. Green Bay came close to defeating New York after an unforced fumble by Saquon Barkley gave them life. However, despite scoring the game-winning score with less than two minutes remaining, the Packers defense allowed Giants third-string (and rookie) quarterback Tommy Devito to drive 57 yards for the game-winning field goal.
Alexander didn’t even play in the game, by the way, as he continues to battle through a shoulder injury.
The win was huge for the Lions, as they look to clinch their first division title since 1993. Essentially, their magic number to claim the NFC North is two for the Packers and three for the Vikings with four games remaining. Each remaining Lions win or Packers/Vikings loss takes a tally off that magic number.
So, essentially, the Lions need just two wins in their final four games, provided one of those wins comes against the Vikings. And there are plenty of other possible scenarios if the Packers and Vikings lose another game or two.
