Eastern Michigan apologizes for punch that sparked brawl following bowl loss to South Alabama.

Eastern Michigan’s athletic director apologized to the South Alabama football team and supporters on Sunday, a day after an EMU player stormed onto the field after the 68 Ventures Bowl and assaulted an opposition player in the head.

That EMU player later apologized for unleashing that first punch.

The punch caused an on-field brawl while South Alabama players sang the university’s alma mater, which was being played by the USA marching band. South Alabama had recently defeated EMU, 59-10, at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the USA campus in Mobile.

TikTok user “south_alabamian” submitted a video of the incident shortly after the game with the comment “No class…”, and the video gained over four million views and attention over the weekend.

According to the footage, an EMU player charged into a throng of Jaguars teammates and hit a South Alabama player in the back of the head. It then shows another South Alabama player dragging an EMU player onto the field, resulting in a free-for-all between members of both teams, with smaller confrontations breaking out on the field.

Korey Hernandez of Eastern Michigan apologized on social media Sunday night for hitting South Alabama defensive back Jamarrien Burt while his back was turned following the Jaguars’ victory.

“I must first apologize for the embarrassment that I have caused for my family, my team, the Eastern Michigan University community, and the Mid-American Conference by my actions last night,” Hernandez posted on X, also known as Twitter. “I have also had the opportunity to personally apologize to Jamarrien Burt and Coach Wommack of South Alabama, and both have accepted my apology.”

Scott Wetherbee, vice president and director of sports at Eastern Michigan, denounced the actions of some of the EMU football team’s student athletes after the game in what he called a “ugly incident.”

“We are deeply upset and embarrassed by what happened,” Wetherbee said. “Their conduct does not reflect the great pride and high standards we place on the game and our program, and the expectations for good sportsmanship and exemplary conduct of student-athletes on and off the field.”

Wetherbee called the acts on the field after the game “completely unacceptable,” and he apologized on behalf of EMU Athletics to the EMU community as well as the South Alabama team and spectators.

South Alabama Athletics Director Joel Erdmann replied to that apology in Mobile.

“While we are disappointed in the incident that occurred following our team’s victory, we are grateful to the leadership at Eastern Michigan University for accepting responsibility for the incident and reaching out to our leadership here at South Alabama to apologize and assure us they will fully investigate the matter,” Erdmann said in a statement. We do not believe this incident reflects the principles of Eastern Michigan University or its football program in any manner. We hope that this incident does not overshadow the fact that the Jaguars are the 68th Ventures Bowl champions.”

Complete official statement from Eastern Michigan University Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee:

“We strongly condemn the actions of some of the EMU football team’s student-athletes in the ugly incident that occurred following last night’s 68 Ventures Bowl.” What transpired has profoundly saddened and embarrassed us. Their behavior does not reflect the immense pride and high standards we hold for the game and our program, as well as the expectations for good sportsmanship and exceptional behavior of student-athletes on and off the field. What occurred was just inappropriate. We sincerely apologize to the Eastern Michigan University community, as well as the South Alabama team and fans. I have contacted South Alabama Director of Athletics Joel Erdmann to convey our heartfelt apologies, and Coach Creighton has contacted Coach Wommack in the same manner.

We are committed to providing information and footage in order to properly comprehend what occurred. As Coach Creighton noted in the postgame press conference, this type of incident has no place in the Eastern Michigan University football program. I have spoken with Mid-American Conference Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, and we are committed to working together to examine the situation in accordance with institutional and Conference regulations. We are continuing to investigate the incident and the behavior of the student-athletes involved, and we will take necessary action as additional information becomes available.”

Complete statement by Joel Erdmann, South Alabama director of athletics:

“I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Jerry Silverstein and the City of Mobile for inviting us to participate in the 2023 68 Ventures Bowl.” Our student-athletes and coaches had an outstanding experience, and we are extremely proud of them for winning the first bowl championship in school history in front of our devoted supporters and community. It is an accomplishment that will not be forgotten.

While we are disappointed in the incident that occurred following our team’s victory, we are grateful to the leadership at Eastern Michigan University for accepting responsibility for the incident and reaching out to our leadership here at South Alabama to apologize and assure us that the matter will be thoroughly investigated. We do not believe this incident reflects the principles of Eastern Michigan University or its football program in any manner. We hope that this incident does not overshadow the fact that the Jaguars are the 68th Ventures Bowl champions.”
