Transfer portal update: Georgia and Ohio State are threatening to overtake LSU in the quarterback sweepstakes
Some of the nation’s top signal-callers will soon be on the move.
More than 90 quarterbacks have entered the college football transfer portal, and some of the top signal-callers have already announced their plans. Others, such as Washington State’s Cameron Ward and Kansas State’s Will Howard, are the targets of intense recruiting battles between several of the country’s top programs.
According to 247Sports reporter Chris Hummer, 247Sports reporter Matt Zenitz, and ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Ohio State lost starting quarterback Kyle McCord to the portal and are a transfer threat. Georgia is awaiting an NFL decision from starter Carson Beck, who is likely to make some noise if he goes pro.
LSU lost star quarterback Jayden Daniels this offseason, but he is a candidate to return due to other options on the roster.
According to Zenitz, Hummer, and Thamel, here is the most recent information on several of the transfer portal’s top quarterbacks:
LOUISVILLE IS AN IDEAL LANDING SPOT FOR TYLER SHOUGH
Tyler Shough possesses “NFL ability,” according to Zenitz, and will be in a prime position to showcase it next season under Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm.
“Louisville picked up Tyler Shough, a talented guy,” Thamel told College GameDay Podcast. He broke his collarbone, re-injured his shoulder the following year, and then broke his fibula this year. It’ll be interesting to see him with Jeff Brohm, who should always be a top veteran portal target for quarterbacks due to their ability to huck it. He’s an excellent play caller.”
THERE’S A LOT OF BUZZ FOR WASHINGTON AND WILL ROGERS
Will Rogers brought a Crystal Ball to Washington this week, and Zenitz believes the Huskies are in a “strong position” to land the Mississippi State transfer. Thamel speculates on how Rogers’ addition to Washington’s roster will affect the rest of the team:
“Washington is in a unique position,” Thamel explained. “I’ve heard a lot about Will Rogers there.” That’s just buzz, even though it’s not done. Dylan Morris is a really good and young player on the Washington campus. They received a five-star commitment from the Sacramento region. Does that alter the calculus?”
CAM WARD AND WILL HOWARD ARE NAMES TO WATCH AT USC
Cameron Ward of Washington State is one of the hottest names on the transfer market and a priority for USC this offseason. Will Howard of Kansas State is in the same boat.
“USC has been flirting around Cam Ward,” Thamel revealed. “They’ve been flirting around Will Howard,” Thamel pointed out. “The starters from Washington State and Kansas State are names to keep an eye on in So Cal.” He also used the Trojans’ quarterback room as an example of how bringing in transfers can have an impact on the rest of the roster.”
FSU IS NOT AS HIGH ON DJ UIAGALELEI AS SOME REPORT
After Uiagalelei entered the portal, Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz reported that Florida State and Louisville were early options. Though the Cardinals are no longer an option following Tyler Shough’s commitment, Mississippi State has emerged as an option thanks to new head coach Jeff Lebby.
“Florida State’s in the market,” Thamel explained. “There are a couple of guys that they’ve looked at.” There’s some buzz about DJ Uiagalelei, but I think he’s a little lower on their list.”
NOTRE DAME STILL THE FAVORITE FOR RILEY LEONARD
Leonard paid a visit to Notre Dame this week and made his eighth Crystal Ball prediction in favor of the Irish on Thursday. Other schools, including Ohio State, have expressed interest in Leonard, but the Irish continue to hold a strong recruiting advantage.
“Riley Leonard [visited Notre Dame this week],” Thamel explained. “I was told his great-grandfather played football at Notre Dame, and that appears to be fated, but it’s not done until it’s done.”
GEORGIA MAY LOOK FOR DEPTH IN THE PORTAL IF CARSON BECK LEAVES
According to Zenitz, there is “growing optimism” within the Georgia program that quarterback Carson Beck will forego the NFL Draft and return to Athens next season. However, if he decides to go pro, the Bulldogs will have limited depth at quarterback behind five-star Dylan Raiola now that Brock Vandagriff has committed to Kentucky and could look to the portal.
“What if Carson Beck leaves Georgia?” Thamel stated. “He’s a fantastic prospect.” He didn’t play well in the SEC championship game, but that could be an opening.”
OHIO STATE IS A THREAT TO JUMP INTO QB SWEEPSTAKES
According to Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz, Ohio State has had at least one conversation with Washington State transfer Cameron Ward, but Ryan Day and company have kept their cards close to their chest. According to Thamel, the Buckeyes could wait to see what they have in Devin Brown after Kyle McCord leaves.
“You know, do they or don’t they for a place like Ohio State?” “Devin Brown gets a tryout in the bowl game, right?” Thamel asked. “It’ll be really interesting to see if they jump in the sweepstakes.”
LSU IS ROLLING WITH GARRETT NUSSMEIER
LSU is “very comfortable” with backup Garrett Nussmeier, according to Glen West of Geaux247, but the Tigers should add a quarterback through the transfer portal. Across six games this season, the former four-star recruit has completed 51.5% of his passes for 196 yards and one touchdown.According to Brad Crawford, he’s an early dark horse for the Heisman Trophy.
“LSU is probably going to go with Garrett Nussmeier, who’s been the longtime backup, who I think is really talented,” Thamel said in an interview.
