Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks is facing a hefty punishment for a play he made against the Los Angeles Rams last week. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Witherspoon has been fined $10,927 by the NFL for a play that was ruled unnecessary roughness. It’s the latest in a string of fines issued this year for too physical plays.
The action occurred during a 17-16 loss for the Seahawks. Witherspoon, a talented rookie, was fined for a highly violent tackle on a Rams receiver. A suplex play occurs when a player is hoisted and flung to the ground by slamming them on their back.
The fine is a blot on what has otherwise been a terrific year for the rookie. Witherspoon has 57 total tackles for the Seahawks this season, including 42 solo stops. He also has 14 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and an interception for the team. The Seahawks defense has high expectations for Witherspoon, the team’s first-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Witherspoon was the fifth overall pick.
The fine comes only a few days after the Seahawks were humiliated 31-13 by the San Francisco 49ers on Thanksgiving. Witherspoon stated that the defense needed to improve after that game, and they will. The Seahawks are 6-5 on the season and need to win quickly to keep alive in the NFC West division.
