Alfie May was on the bench during Birmingham City’s 2-0 victory over Rotherham United.

Chris Davies has acknowledged that illness influenced his decision to keep Birmingham City’s leading scorer Alfie May out of the starting lineup against Rotherham.

May, who scored in each of the Blues’ first four League One games, was an unexpected absence from the starting lineup at the New York Stadium. The 31-year-old striker had been ill in the lead-up, but Davies chose Lyndon Dykes instead.

“Alfie had had a little bit of a cold during the week and it disrupted his week a little bit, and I just felt it was a good opportunity to give Lyndon a start,” Davies told me. “I believed he imposed himself effectively.

“He’s a different type of striker than we have; he’s more of a reference point who can hold the ball, which he did admirably. For us, it’s about pressing and having energy at the top, and he attempted to do the same.”

Tomoki Iwata and Jay Stansfield once again shared goal scoring duties. Iwata scored first, followed by Stansfield’s second goal, bringing his total to three.

When Iwata went off the field to be replaced by Marc Leonard late in the game, Blues fans’ hearts sank, but Davies wasn’t too concerned when asked about it later. “I think it was cramp in his calf but I don’t know that for sure,” he informed me.
