Huddersfield have won the race to recruit forward Freddie Ladapo after he was released by Ipswich.

Following the Tractor Boys’ promotion to the Premier League, the 31-year-old’s contract at Portman Road was terminated on transfer deadline day.

Ladapo has signed a two-year contract with the Terriers, who beat out numerous other clubs for his services.

The forward has won four promotions in the last five seasons, three of which came from League One.

“I’m really happy to be here and excited to get started and contribute to the challenge ahead,” he told the club’s website, which is external.

“The stature and desire of the club appeals to me, and it reminds me of joining Ipswich in the same league.

“I know this division and what it takes to get out of it – and I love that we haven’t been shy about admitting that’s exactly what our collective ambition is.”

Ladapo began his professional career with Colchester, and after nine non-league clubs, including a successful spell at Margate, he was signed by Crystal Palace following a trial, making his Premier League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2017.

He moved to Southend before hitting 19 goals for Plymouth in 2018-19, earning a club-record move to Rotherham United, where he scored 41 goals in three seasons, securing automatic promotion to the Championship twice and winning the EFL Trophy.

He joined Ipswich ahead of the 2022-23 season, scoring 17 league goals to help the Tractor Boys back to the Championship.

He scored four goals in 22 appearances, primarily off the bench, as Ipswich won promotion to the top division last season, but spent the rest of the season on loan at Charlton, making 14 appearances.

Following a thorough pre-season with Ipswich, the striker, who will wear number 19, joins the Huddersfield squad for Saturday’s League One trip to Bolton.
