Richard Stearman, a former Ipswich Town loanee, has announced his retirement from playing after taking on a first-team coaching role at Solihull Moors last week.

The 36-year-old concluded his career at the Moors, where he joined last summer, and now plays non-league football for the first time.

Stearman appeared in 27 games for the West Midlands club, who lost to Bromley on penalties in the National League play-off final last season.

He began his career at Leicester City before going on to Wolves, where he helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League.

The defender reconnected with Mick McCarthy when he joined the Blues on loan in the second part of the 2012/13 season, appearing 15 times for the club.

He also spent time at Fulham, Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, and Derby County during his 20-year career.

Stearman announced his retirement on Twitter (X): “As players, we all know that this day will come. However, it has always looked to be in the future. Another season of playing will just happen because that is what we do.

“For me, that day has arrived. After 20 years and nearly 600 appearances, I am retiring from professional football.

“Looking back on my career, I feel extremely lucky and honored to have represented the clubs I have. Thank you to all of the managers, coaches, general staff, and my agent, Tam. Without you, none of this would have been possible.

“I want to thank my teammates. On a daily basis, you have made going to work an utter pleasure. We’ve experienced extreme highs and lows together, and I consider many of you lifelong friends. In essence, you are what I will miss the most.

“To our fans. Thank you for your continuing support. As Covid demonstrated, the game is a shadow of itself without you. I’m grateful to have formed a personal bond with several of you. Please know that I have enjoyed my time at each of your clubs. I am and will remain a fan of them all.

“To my parents and sister.” Thank you doesn’t appear to be enough. Your tireless sacrifices have enabled me to realize my ambition. I hope I’ve made you proud.

Stearman will now join Solihull’s coaching staff, working alongside manager Andy Whing at Damson Park.

He will also assist with their Elite Academy setup, and upon joining the coaching team, he stated: “I’m very happy to be taking on this responsibility! I gained valuable experience as a player/coach last year.

“I’m glad for the opportunity and for what the gaffer and coaching staff allowed me to accomplish last season. It was wonderful to learn from them. But now it feels like the proper time to start coaching full-time.”
