The striker was released by the Rams at the end of last season, but he now appears to have secured a move.

According to sources, released Derby County striker Dwight Gayle is poised to sign on a free transfer.

The former Newcastle and Stoke City forward joined the Rams as a free agent in February and left at the end of last season. And now, the 34-year-old appears to be on his way to Scotland, with Hibernian likely to sign him.

Gayle scored three goals in six Derby games, including his debut in a 3-0 victory over Port Vale. However, just as he was gaining momentum, his season was cut short by a hamstring injury sustained in a 1-0 win against Bolton in March.

He became a popular character during his brief stint at Pride Park, but was let go at the end of the season when the Rams won promotion to the Championship.

Gayle has been training hard to stay fit this summer and has joined a Professional Footballers Association program meant to keep free agents fresh in the event of a transfer.

A number of former Derby County players took part, including Martyn Waghorn, Ravel Morrison, and Joe Wildsmith, who is now at West Brom. Gayle, 34, has had a terrific career, playing in the Premier League for Crystal Palace and Newcastle.
