Derby County are ready to welcome Ben Osborn back from the international break, with Paul Warne confirming he may have played against Bristol City.

Derby County’s return to the Championship has been promising.

Only four games into the season have passed, but with two victories and two defeats, there have been positives for the Rams to take and areas that need to be improved on over the international break.

The period without a game also allows the Rams to work with some of their injured players. It will be hoped that the group is as strong as possible when they return to play against Cardiff City on September 14th.

Derby County’s summer signing Ben Osborn appears to be a potential returnee. After starting the opening two games of the Championship season, the former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United player has missed the subsequent three matches in all competitions.

However, in an interview with Derbyshire Live, manager Paul Warne stated that he could have had a role in the weekend win over Bristol City. To avoid any risk, he was left out, although he is expected to return against Cardiff.

Warne also indicated there are no concerns about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Kenzo Goudmijn, or Ryan Nyambe. Corey Blackett-Taylor and Conor Washington were also in training prior to the game but were not selected.

The fight for a starting spot

Competition for a place in Warne’s starting midfield looks to be really strong this season.

David Ozoh, on loan from Crystal Palace, appears to be a valuable asset for Derby County, while returning loan favourite Ebou Adams will be expected to take a starting berth. Kenzo Goudmijn appears to be the preferred candidate at a slightly more advanced position.

It means that once Osborn is considered ready, he will face a stiff competition to return to the team. A good couple of weeks while others are away on international duty might benefit the midfielder greatly.

One thing that could help Osborn in his fight is his versatility.

He can play anywhere along the left side, including as a left back. That position appears to be open, with Callum Elder and Craig Forsyth the only active candidates.

The focus after the break

Derby County has begun strongly, and they will be happy to be back at home in their first game back.

However, they will be determined to miss the mark on the journey. Pride Park can be a fortress, but earning five points away from home will be critical if they are to succeed in their Championship return.

So far, both away games have been in defeats against Blackburn Rovers and Watford. The Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss to Barrow would have also raised concerns.

After the Cardiff tie, a tough trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United awaits.
