Watson becomes a free agent.

Louie Watson, a Luton midfielder, has been released from his contract through mutual consent.

The 23-year-old joined the Hatters in July 2022 while former manager Nathan Jones was in charge, and he made his full Championship debut on January 1, 2023, in a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town. Watson went on to appear nine times as Town gained promotion to the Premier League, before being loaned to League One club Charlton Athletic as Luton began their top-flight season.

The ex-Derby County youngster and Republic of Ireland youth international appeared 27 times for the Addicks last season, scoring once, but did not play again after February 10, as he was not selected for any of Luton’s pre-season games upon his return to Kenilworth Road. Edwards recently explained why this was the case: “Louie is someone who will need to try to find his football someplace else this season. We had that chat from day one of preseason, and that is the circumstance.”

With the transfer deadline passed on Friday evening, Watson may now hunt for a new club after being declared a free agent, according to a statement on the Hatters website: “We have reached an agreement with Louie Watson to release the midfielder from his contract by mutual consent.” The 23-year-old was bought from Derby County in the summer of 2022 and made nine appearances in the 22/23 season before being loaned to Charlton Athletic last season. We would like to thank Louie for his contributions to our promotion to the Premier League and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
