Birmingham City had an offer rejected for a defender who had previously been sought by Chelsea.

According to a Portuguese report, the Blues have bid roughly €3 million (£2.6 million) for Portimonense’s Filipe Relvas, but more money is needed to secure the defender.

Record claims. Portimonense instantly rejected Birmingham’s approach for Relvas. According to reports, the second-tier Portuguese team was dissatisfied with the offer and is looking for a higher price.

It’s unclear how much Portimonense wants for Relvas, but it appears they’re not in a rush to sell him. The 24-year-old center defender made 32 appearances in the Portuguese premier flight last season before being demoted.

Relvas has been a regular for some years, appearing 57 times in the two seasons before last. With just under two years remaining on his present contract, it’s understandable that Portimonense will not budge.

Chelsea was once connected with signing Relvas, with French website Foot Mercato reporting last August that the Blues had made a formal enquiry to sign him. Wolfsburg, Benfica, and Besiktas were also thought to be interested, with scouts from each club keeping a close eye on the defender last season.
