Croatian had not competed since October 2021.

Ivo Karlovic, one of the most unusual players ever to grace the ATP Tour, announced his retirement on Wednesday via a social media post.

Karlovic, 44, a former No. 14 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, had not played since the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in October 2021. Karlovic, an eight-time tour-level singles champion, is known for his powerful serve, which is powered by his 6′ 11″ (2.11m) stature.

“Some of you have noticed that it’s been a while since I played a tournament and still ask me on a daily basis if and when I’ll be returning to the tour,” Karlovic wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I apologize for disappointing you, but with this letter, I’d want to officially announce my retirement.

“I’ve had a really rewarding, unconventional, and extended career coming from extremely poor origins, especially for a tennis player. Croatia was a totally different country in the 1980s and 1990s when I was growing up, and I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished and conquered.”

Other career milestones for Karlovic includes upsetting then-defending champion Lleyton Hewitt on his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2003, where he also reached his sole major quarter-final in 2009.

“To all of my followers and supporters over the years, thank you for being a part of my journey. I love you all and hope to see you again,” Karlovic concluded.

“I plan to stay involved in tennis and attempt to pass on my expertise and wonderful experiences on tour to future generations of players. The voyage continues, and the focus is changed. I’m grateful.
