Ayumu Yokoyama’s club has stated that the Japanese forward would soon complete a transfer overseas.

Sagan Tosu, a Japanese club, has announced that highly-rated attacker Ayumu Yokoyama is expected to sign with an overseas club, despite reports linking the 21-year-old with Birmingham City.

Japanese news sites claimed earlier this week that the Blues were in negotiations with Sagan about Yokoyama, who has five goals and three assists in this season’s J1 League. And today, Sagan has disclosed that Yokoyama has been granted permission to depart the squad to complete a transfer.

On Thursday morning, Sagan said on their website: “We would like to inform you that Ayumu Yokoyama will be leaving the team to complete the necessary procedures and preparations for a transfer to an overseas club.” A formal contract will be signed after he has undergone a local medical examination, and we will make an announcement once it has been signed.”

Yokoyama, whose father, Hirotishi Yokoyama, also played professionally, appears to have sparked interest from other European clubs. The teenager is recognized for his speed and talent, and he has improved his goal-scoring abilities this season.

He moved up to the J1 League with Tosu two years ago and has played 40 games in Japan’s top flight, scoring five goals and providing seven assists. All of his goals have come in the 2024 season, despite the fact that Tosu is second from bottom with ten games remaining.

The Blues are looking to boost their attacking line, and Yokoyama can play in the middle or off the left wing. If he signs with the Blues, he will be joined by compatriot Koji Miyoshi on Chris Davies’ team. Miyoshi joined Blues from Royal Antwerp last year and has since become a popular figure at St Andrew’s.
