Michigan football’s fall camp is about to begin, and we now know the current quarterback depth chart.
The quarterback is the most talked-about position in Michigan football this spring and summer. J.J. McCarthy, the Wolverines’ two-year starting quarterback and All-Big Ten member, has entered the NFL Draft following his junior season.
So, who will start at quarterback this fall? According to Michigan offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, all five scholarship quarterbacks will have an equal shot to take the starting job. Campbell stated that when fall camp begins on Wednesday, Michigan will go from oldest to youngest quarterback.
“We’ll just start from the oldest to the youngest. “As simple as that,” Campbell stated. “We’re starting out that way, and it’s a fluid operation that will evolve every day. We will ensure that everyone has the opportunity to run with the ones, and we will analyze it on a daily basis.”
This implies that the current Michigan depth chart includes Jack Tuttle, Davis Warren, Alex Orji, Jayden Dengegal, and Jadyn Davis. Campbell underlined that each player will have an opportunity. He had similar thoughts during Michigan’s Spring Game in April, and it appears like the Wolverines will use the same approach come autumn.
Campbell told the reporters on Tuesday that he has been involved in settling a quarterback fight for the fourth time since 2019 (at Penn State). He believes that determining a starting is a crucial procedure and does not rush it.
“What I’ve learnt from all of these is that there is certainly a deadline by which you must make a decision. “That’s the first game, correct?” Campbell stated. “But you don’t want to hasten the decision, correct? You need to make sure you prepare those guys.”
Campbell feels that evaluating quarterbacks on a daily basis is the right approach. Picking a starter too early may result in unpleasant scenarios later on if the coaching staff recognizes they made a mistake. Giving each player adequate opportunities to earn the starting role will provide the coaching staff with all of the necessary evaluations.
“And if you make the decision too soon, you could find yourself halfway through the season attempting to rectify that item and go in a new route. You want to make sure you take your time, go through the process thoroughly, examine each practice, each meeting, and how they connect with the players before making the best decision for the squad.”
The Wolverines will begin fall camp on July 31 and face Fresno State on August 31 to kick off the season.
