Sheffield Wednesday, led by Danny Rohl, will compete with Birmingham City this summer to sign a former loan star.

The Championship team secured their survival toward the end of the 2023/24 season, following a run of only one defeat in their final eight league games, defeating Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion along the way.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City were demoted to the third tier despite a last-day victory over Norwich City, but they have spent no time in preparing their squad for an immediate promotion, with acquisitions like as Alex Cochrane and Alfie May, but will they beat Wednesday to their latest transfer target?

Ugbo back to England?

According to journalist Alex Miller, Sheffield Wednesday’s approach for striker Ike Ugbo was rejected by French third-tier side Troyes. Ugbo spent the second part of last season at Hillsborough and played a critical role in confirming their safety.

To add insult to injury, Miller claims that rival Championship side Stoke City and League One team Birmingham City are also keeping a close eye on the situation in preparation for their own potential move.

How did he fare last season?

Ugbo spent the first half of the 2023/24 season with Cardiff City before joining Sheffield Wednesday for the remaining.

The 25-year-old scored five goals in 22 appearances in all competitions for South Wales before moving to Hillsborough, where he improved his tally despite playing fewer games.

Ugbo scored seven goals and contributed an assist in 19 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, including braces against Bristol City and Birmingham.

Finally, Ugbo has sparked a lot of interest and has already been the target of a transfer bid, which suggests he may be leaving the French club this summer, giving rival clubs a good chance to sign the 25-year-old.

Birmingham City have already signed Alfie May from Charlton Athletic and secured a new deal for Lukas Jutkiewicz, but they appear to be looking for another attacking option.

Although the substance of Sheffield Wednesday’s bid has not been revealed, it could be difficult for a team to overcome Danny Rohl’s side given his success there last season.
