Birmingham City is in the midst of a summer transfer reconstruction after relegation to League One.

Max Johnston, a Scottish superstar, is the latest player linked with a move to St Andrew’s as Birmingham City’s summer redevelopment gathers momentum.

Blues have already signed four new players this summer: Ryan Allsop, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfie May, and Emil Hansson. There’s plenty more to come, as Sky Sports reports that Johnston, a 20-year-old right-back with Austrian club Sturm Graz, is on the Blues’ radar.

According to the source, Blues, Luton Town, and Oxford United have all expressed interest in signing Johnston on loan from Sturm Graz. Danish club AGF has also been connected with the defender.

Johnston joined Sturm Graz from his hometown club Motherwell last year and played 20 games as they won the Austrian Bundesliga. Sturm Graz also won the Austrian Cup, completing a domestic double.

Blues have only one right-back on their roster, Ethan Laird, and are looking to bolster all aspects of their defense. In an interview with the Daily Record, Johnston stated that his next move must provide regular football.

“It has always been about playing football for me,” he told me. “Wherever I go next season, I want to strive forward. I want to reach the best level I can. I don’t want to join to a club and earn a decent pay but having little prospect of playing first-team football.

“I want to study, grow, and progress. I want to go to a club where I know if I do well, I will get a chance to play in the first team. I understand that you are not promised to play, but I want to give myself the best chance possible. It is then up to me to push and win the jersey.”
