In an attempt to infuse his squad with personality and free Inter Miami to sign Luis Suarez, Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney may focus on a former MLS rival.
In the upcoming transfer window, Wayne Rooney of Birmingham City may look to one of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami teammates to help him add his own unique touch to the team.
The former England captain’s team has lost each of his first three games in charge, making it a challenging start to his tenure at St Andrew’s. The ambitious American owners of the club controversially appointed Rooney, especially after they fired well-liked former manager John Eustace.
After losses to Middlesbrough and Hull City, the 38-year-old would oversee the Blues’ comprehensive 3-1 loss away at Southampton. Even though his time in the Second City hasn’t started off well, it seems that the former Manchester United hero is sticking with it.
With a possible transfer for Josef Martinez of Inter Miami reportedly in the works, it appears that Rooney has his sights set on January already. When Messi’s contract expires, the Blues head coach may try to entice his colleague to the EFL Championship, according to Alan Nixon via Patreon.
The Venezuelan star was a mainstay for rivals Atlanta United before moving to Florida, and he only played for Miami for one season. The 30-year-old, who scored 105 goals in 161 MLS games, has already been told by Vice City manager Tata Martino that he won’t be back for the upcoming campaign.
In theory, that would create a window of opportunity for prospective suitors from Europe to seize him while he’s free in January. It has been suggested that Miami will try to sign Luis Suarez to replace the striker when his contract expires on December 31.
Martinez is currently a member of the Herons’ international player roster even though he does not currently hold a Designated Player position. Furthermore, head coach Martino has acknowledged in no uncertain terms that he and his backroom staff have been getting ready for the possible arrival of Suarez.
“We have an analysis with Luis and an analysis without Luis within our analysis of the upcoming season and the needs we may have,” the Argentine confirmed. We’ll be ready to move in the appropriate direction when the time comes to officially announce Suarez’s status with Inter Miami.
Birmingham manager Rooney hasn’t revealed any specifics regarding possible additions, but he hasn’t hidden the fact that his current team needs to quickly adjust to his demands. Speaking following Brum’s previous defeat to Hull City, he did concede that further reinforcements might be called in.
“I’m very clear that you want to change how you want to play, but I don’t want to push someone too far out of their comfort zone,” he stated. We have done that in terms of building out from the back in the last two games. It’s something I need to get used to, and we’ll start progressively assembling our team for what we want in January and the summer. That being said, the players still have a chance to show me what they’re capable of right now, and they are supportive of the plan.”
