Ipswich Town have appointed experienced goalkeeper David Martin as player-coach.

Martin, 38, was signed by Liverpool between 2006 and 2010, however he never played for the club, instead being loaned out to Leicester, Leeds, and Derby.

He went on to play almost 250 games for MK Dons before joining West Ham as a third-choice keeper in 2019. He spent last season as a player-coach at National League team Southend, making nine appearances for the Essex club.

He joined Ipswich to aid goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin with training, scouting, and recruitment, as well as monitoring goalkeepers on loan. He holds a UEFA B licence.

He will ‘train with the first team as required’, according to the club.

Following Vaclav Hladky’s recent departure after his contract ended, Town’s current senior goalkeepers are Christian Walton and Cieran Slicker, with the latter poised to leave on loan.

Meanwhile, Ipswich have appointed the recently retired Sone Aluko as first-team coach.
