Idris El Mizouni, an Ipswich Town midfielder, will shortly join recently promoted Championship team Oxford United in a £400,000 transfer, according to the EADT and Ipswich Star.

The 23-year-old sparked widespread interest after impressing on loan at Leyton Orient over the previous two seasons, helping them win League Two and then finish 11th in League One.

Town recently used the one-year extension clause in the Paris-born player’s contract to safeguard him as an asset.

Barnsley, a League One team, are said to have fought hard for his signature, but the one-cap Tunisian international has decided to join Oxford on a three-year contract after they were promoted to the second tier via play-offs. He will team up with former Blues Greg Leigh and Kyle Edwards at Kassam Stadium.

El Mizouni attended Town’s academy as a youth. He earned his senior debut in the latter stages of the Blues’ Championship relegation season in 2019, when Paul Lambert brought him on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw at Bristol City.

He went on to make 16 starts and 10 substitute appearances for the Blues, interspersed with loan spells at Cambridge United and Grimsby, where he briefly played under both Paul Cook and Kieran McKenna.

He will be Town’s second summer sale, following striker Gassan Ahadme’s £1 million move to Charlton.
