Wrexham AFC has signed midfielder George Dobson on a free transfer, reuniting him with boss Phil Parkinson.

The former Charlton Athletic midfielder agreed to a contract with Hungarian team Fehervar, but it was amicably dissolved before July 1st. He inks an initial three-year contract with the Red Dragons, becoming their third summer signing following Arthur Okonkwo and Lewis Brunt.

George told the club’s media team the following.

“I’m genuinely delighted. It’s the Club in the EFL that everyone wants to come to and when I got the opportunity to join it was exciting.

“When I spoke to the Gaffer, and he showed his interest it felt like an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“I can’t wait to meet all the supporters and hopefully carry on the success of the Club and have an enjoyable season.”

Who Is George Dobson?

George worked his way up at Arsenal and West Ham United before joining Walsall on loan in 2016/17.

He then went on loan to Sparta Rotterdam in Holland for the 2017/18 season, where he struggled to break into the senior squad.

He then moved permanently to Walsall, where he made 91 appearances. Following their relegation from League One, he joined Sunderland, which was managed by Phil Parkinson, who now manages Wrexham.

In the 20/21 season, he struggled to make an impact in Sunderland’s first squad and was loaned out to AFC Wimbledon for the second half.

The midfielder later joined Charlton Athletic, where he played over 130 games and served as captain during the 23/24 season.

What does he bring to Wrexham?

The midfielder has more than 250 games of League One experience. The 26-year-old midfielder is primarily defensive but can also play a box-to-box role, winning an average of 6.73 duels per 90, 7.15 recoveries per 90, and 40 successful passes per 90 in the league last season.

In terms of defensive midfielders, Wrexham now have George Evans, who also has much higher-level experience, and with League One looking to be extremely competitive this season, competition for spots will be critical.

They also have Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon to play in more forward midfield roles, both of whom have played at a higher level, and if Phil Parkinson sticks to his 532 system from last season, there will be plenty of contention for starting spots.
