According to iNews, West Ham United want to recruit Lille’s Jonathan David this summer over Tottenham, Manchester United, and Aston Villa.

The news agency writes on their website (19 June) that the Canada international is eligible for transfer as he enters the final year of his contract, with the French side seeking a sum of £25 million.

But the Hammers would have to beat their Premier League rivals to his signature, as United are already in talks with his representatives about a transfer to Old Trafford.

West Ham United need a new striker, Jonathan David is him

There has been a lot of conjecture surrounding summer moves at the London Stadium this season, and a striker is believed to be Julen Lopetegui’s first priority.

Michail Antonio is wanted by clubs in the MLS and Saudi Arabia [Athletic, 15 May], while Danny Ings is wanted by Southampton [talkSPORT, 28 May], leaving the incoming manager with no choices up front.

Youssef En-Nesyri has been heavily linked, but that appears improbable, and with Lille willing to make a deal and David’s record so impressive, West Ham would be stupid not to check into him.

The Canadian international has 26 goals in 48 matches for his national team and 52 goals in all competitions for Lille during the last two seasons, demonstrating his ability to finish in front of goal.

At 24, he’s only going to get better, so it seems like a no-brainer to close this deal as quickly as possible to avoid other clubs getting there first.
