Birmingham City are hoping to sign Burnley midfielder Scott Twine ahead of Championship clubs Sunderland and Bristol City, according to Alan Nixon.

The League One club is looking to strengthen its squad as it rebuilds after being relegated from the Championship last season. According to the source, Burnley is keen to transfer the player, and Birmingham has inquired about his availability.

They could face opposition from managerless Sunderland and Bristol City, who may still enter the race.

Who is Scott Twine?

Scott Twine rose through the ranks of Swindon Town, with loan spells at Chippenham, Waterford, and Newport County. He appeared 59 times with the Robins, scoring nine goals, before leaving for MK Dons in the summer of 2021.

In his debut season with the Dons, he was named League One Player of the Season after scoring 20 goals and assisting 13 times across all competitions.

This outstanding campaign drew the attention of Burnley, which paid a seven-figure sum for the player. Following that, he had loan spells at Hull City and Bristol City and is expected to leave permanently after only 18 appearances for his parent club.

A good move for Birmingham City?

It is undoubtedly a bold move. Twine, despite his paucity of appearances for Burnley, remains a high-quality performer. He has proven it in patches for Bristol City and Hull City, but he may need to find a permanent home when he hits his prime. The transfer to Burnley was perhaps a little too soon, but following the season he had enjoyed with MK Dons, he presumably felt unstoppable. A return to League One for a team looking to contend at the top may help revitalize his career by allowing him to demonstrate his abilities once more at the level where he won Player of the Season.
