After the first 48 hours of free agency, a part of the Detroit Lions’ fandom expressed concerned over the apparent absence of a “splash” signing in free agency.
Following a successful 2023 season, many anticipated Detroit to strengthen its secondary and defensive line.
Adding D.J. Reader gives Detroit a strong run defense and offers Alim McNeill more support this season.
Prior to his season-ending quad rupture, the 29-year-old was performing well on the football field.
In 2023, Reader played 535 snaps and received an 82.2 PFF grade. He finished with 34 tackles and a sack.
While there are questions about the former Bengals’ health, Detroit’s front office must have felt at ease. The team offered him a two-year contract of up to $27 million.
Reader noted throughout his rehabilitation about the numerous obstacles and challenges that come with recovering from a serious accident.Reader underwent a similar recuperation approach several years ago after tearing his left quad in 2020.
