ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel reported on Friday that the Seattle Seahawks had hired Ryan Grubb, a former offensive coordinator at the University of Washington, to join head coach Mike Macdonald’s staff.
A large part of this looks to be a desire to retain his family in Seattle, and according to Adam Rittenberg, he may bring OL coach Scott Huff with him.
To be honest, I’m not that bothered about Grubb specifically. The offense is led by Kalen DeBoer, who has had a successful career as an offensive coordinator, most recently at Indiana in 2019. As I stated last week when the rumors initially broke, I believe that if Grubb makes that move, the playcalling duties will likely remain in-house. I’m surprised that Sheridan is more likely than Shephard to take on those responsibilities, but Sheridan did take over as Indiana’s offensive coordinator when Kalen left for his first head coaching position. In a recent interview, Tom Allen, the head coach at Indiana at the time, stated that Sheridan served as a quarterback coach until DeBoer took over.
“Kalen coached quarterbacks, but Nick was our quarterbacks coach,” Allen says. “I wanted Kalen to coach the position he wanted. So I said, ‘Nick, I want to keep you on staff, but I need you to switch to tight ends.’ He wasn’t real fired up about that.
“But Nick bought in. I think he’d tell you it was one of the best things he’s ever done. He learned from Kalen, but coaching a new position broadened his understanding of the offense. His willingness to do that is a testament to his maturity. It was pretty cool.”
If those two guys stay, DeBoer will need to hire an OL and TE coach. It’s possible that former TE coach Joe Cox, who left for Ole Miss, would have been retained had the timing been different. Last summer, it was reported that Kurtiss Riggs, 20 year head coach of the Sioux Falls Storm of the Indoor Football League and DeBoer’s college roommate, had stepped down from his post with the intention of joining his old buddy in Seattle. It’s possible that he will be con
The departure of Huff is significant, as improving the offensive line will be possibly the single most important factor in Alabama’s success in 2024. That’ll be an important hire. DeBoer may yet seek his OC outside of the company. Missouri offensive coordinator Kirby Moore, who previously worked as DeBoer’s passing game coordinator at Fresno State, has been mentioned significantly. Sheridan has as much experience in that job as he has, so promotions and raises to keep the remaining offensive staff together are probably prudent.
One thing is certain: this will be an exciting spring.
