BYU’s John Nelson

Nelson was born in Salem, Utah, and played high school football for the Salem Hills Skyhawks.

Nelson finished his senior season with 50 total tackles, 12 sacks, six tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery that he recovered for a touchdown.

Nelson was a three-star recruit and the 30th-best prospect in Utah, with offers from BYU, Idaho State, Weber State, Utah State, and Boise State.

Nelson appeared in 13 games for the Cougars during his freshman season. He has 12 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks.

In 2022, he started 11 of 13 games. He recorded 28 tackles, six for loss, and three sacks.

Nelson suffered numerous injuries last season and only appeared in seven games, making no starts.

In his senior year, the Utah native hopes to get back on the horse and dominate in the trenches for BYU.

Nelson is from an athletic family. His brother, sister, and father all played college basketball. From 1989 to 1994, his mother played college basketball at BYU.
