5-Star Alabama Transfer Speaks Quiet Part Out Loud; Admits Possible Tampering By Iowa

Kadyn Proctor, former Alabama offensive tackle, appeared to pronounce the quiet part aloud when announcing his transfer to Iowa. He may have admitted meddling by the Hawkeyes. Oops!

Proctor, the top-ranked lineman in the 2023 recruiting class, started all games for the Crimson Tide last season. Following some early-season troubles, the freshman was an important part of Tuscaloosa’s College Football Playoff push during his one year there.

He then stated his intention to transfer shortly after Nick Saban’s retirement. Proctor, an Iowa native, committed to the Hawkeyes at an unusual time.

SWARM Collective, the University of Iowa’s top NIL arm, gathered significant funds within 24/48 hours after the five-star lineman entered the portal. There is a direct tie to why this happened.

Regardless matter what motivated Proctor to return to his home state, he did!

Shortly after his declaration, the 6-foot-8, 365-pound tackle arrived to support his new school’s basketball team against Purdue. Naturally, the journalists approached him in the crowd and asked him a few questions.

This is when things may turn dangerous.

Did Iowa tamper with Kadyn Proctor?

Proctor found it easy to transfer to Iowa due to his previous relationship with the faculty. He may have admitted to tampering.

Under the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 13.1.1.3, “an athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletic interests shall not make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA or NAIA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining the written permission of the first institution’s athletics director (or an athletics administrator designated by the athletics department) to do so.” Essentially, a student-athlete at one school cannot be contacted by a staff member from another school without consent.

Proctor unintentionally stated that is exactly what happened…

No bridges were burned [at Iowa.]

That’s why it was so easy for me to pick them when I did enter the transfer portal, because we still have those relationships. Even after I was doing bad in the SEC and struggling, they hit me up and said ‘We’re proud of you, you’re gonna get through this.’ And that’s what ultimately helped me with my decision.

— Kadyn Proctor

While the extent of the Hawkeyes’ relationship with the former Crimson Tide lineman is unclear, what Proctor said on Saturday appears to contravene Bylaw 13.1.1.3. Is this not tampering?

We’ll see if the NCAA reacts to Proctor’s remarks similarly. The (very inadequate) regulatory body of college sports frequently decides what it does and does not want to enforce.

Perhaps there is more to this equation that would not be considered a violation. However, based solely on his admission on Iowa’s in-season contact, it appears that Iowa violated the rules.

Proctor should have avoided saying the silent bit aloud, even if everyone else was doing it. He subjected his new school to scrutiny—or worse.
