5 Colts players are unlikely to make the 53-man roster in 2024

This summer has been all about believing in the Indianapolis Colts’ current roster.

The Colts have done a better job of retaining their own players during free agency than creating headlines by bringing in new players. This is a roster founded on faith in quarterback Anthony Richardson, and their actions have supported that belief.

After the first wave of free agency has passed, let’s take a look at several players who may struggle to make this club in the end, especially given what Indianapolis does in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Tyrie Cleveland, WR

Indianapolis has a few wide receivers, but only one great weapon at the position. Will Alec Pierce or Josh Downs step up to become WR2s this season? Regardless, it’s safe to assume the Colts will select another playmaker in the draft. This will make it difficult for bottom-of-the-squad players like former seventh-round pick Tyrie Cleveland to make the roster this fall. You may argue that he is currently last or second-to-last on the depth chart.

Eric Tomlinson, TE

The Colts must finally figure out what to do with their tight end situation. Is the actual TE1 on the roster? Can Anthony Richardson use Jelani Woods as his go-to weapon in that spot? I believe the Colts will add additional talent to their roster through the draft. When all is said and done, this will result in the deletion of a roster place. Eric Tomlinson currently ranks last on the depth chart. The 8-year veteran did not play last year and is almost certainly gone by September.

Zavier Scott, RB

I’m not even sure if Tyler Goodson or Trey Sermon will make the roster at this time. The Colts still have a significant opportunity to improve at running back. That sounds humorous, but there is little to no evidence supporting Jonathan Taylor. So Zavier Scott’s position at the bottom of the depth chart does not auger well for his future prospects. Scott, an undrafted free agent from Maine, suffered an injury last year while also serving on the practice squad.

Isaiah Land, DE

In addition, Indianapolis may need to sign another edge rusher. They’ve been a solid squad overall in terms of sacks. However, they still lack the actual force off the edge. This category has required a comprehensive team effort, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if the Colts choose an edge rusher earlier rather than later, 2023 undrafted free agent Isaiah Land, who played only 7% of defensive snaps last season, might be in trouble.
