49ers’ cornerback drops eye-opening injury update

Charvarius Ward, 49ers cornerback, underwent surgery this offseason, but he appears to be making good progress.

Charvarius Ward, a cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers, had surgery earlier this offseason to fix a groin injury he experienced in December, but he has delivered some excellent news about his situation with training camp just around the horizon.

“I’m still rehabbing,” Ward stated during an interview on the Up & Adams Show. “I’m working on resuming full-speed running. But I feel good. I feel much better now than I did a few months ago. I was still in a lot of pain at the end of last season. My back, groin, and abdomen were all hurting very bad. But I fought and pushed through it.”

Ward stated that he would be ready for training camp.

This is tremendous news for the 49ers, since Ward is an important part of their outstanding defense.

San Francisco is presently doing OTAs. It will begin its mandatory minicamp on June 4.

Charvarius Ward has broken out with the 49ers

Ward joined the 49ers in 2022 and had a strong rookie season, appearing in all games and recording 87 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 11 passes defended.

Ward was even better this year, appearing in all games and recording 72 tackles, five interceptions, a forced fumble, 23 passes deflected, and a defensive score on his way to his first Pro Bowl selection.

The 28-year-old, who played NCAA football at Middle Tennessee State, was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Chiefs, establishing himself as a reliable cornerback before obtaining a full-time starting spot in 2019. Ward finished the season with 74 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and ten passes defended. He also helped Kansas City win the Super Bowl that year.

While Ward was a good player with the Chiefs, he has really stepped up in San Francisco and become one of the best corners in football.

Overall, the Niners’ passing defense has room to improve, as it finished 14th in the league last season. The 49ers are much stronger at stopping the run, ranking third in the NFL in 2023.

The 49ers addressed their secondary in the second round of the NFL Draft by selecting Florida State cornerback Renardo Green. We’ll see if Green gets considerable playing time alongside Ward in 2024.

San Francisco is coming off a season in which it won 12 games and earned the NFC’s top seed. The Niners advanced to the Super Bowl, where they lost a heartbreaker to the Chiefs in overtime.

The 49ers are considered the favorites to represent the conference in the Super Bowl again next season, hoping to avoid the notorious Super Bowl hangover. Having a healthy Ward with you will undoubtedly make the quest much easier.

San Francisco will begin the regular season against the New York Jets on Monday, September 9.
