4 new logical targets after Chiefs fail in chase of veteran free agent receiver
After failing to sign a seasoned wide receiver this spring, the Kansas City Chiefs have only a few viable choices remaining on the free agent and trade markets.
While the Chiefs were able to win their second consecutive Super Bowl victory earlier this year, they lacked a classic Kansas City Chiefs offensive. The team led by ace quarterback Patrick Mahomes was not the primary force behind their 2023 championship drive, as the defense had to take up the slack for an offense that failed this season.
That is why it is not surprising that the organization has made a concerted effort to bring in a valuable veteran pass catcher who can make an impact in 2024. Last week, it was revealed that the team was in contact with three-time Pro Bowler Odell Beckham Jr. but fell short in their pursuit of the Miami Dolphins.
Then, on Saturday, ESPN NFL source Jeremy Fowler stated that the club and free-agent receiver Zay Flowers had “mutual interest,” but they were once again passed over for a free-agent receiver, this time by Arizona Cardinals.
With the Kansas City Chiefs still looking for a seasoned wide receiver, we look at four guys who could sign before optional camps begin.

Hunter Renfrow
Because he is still available, he would not be pricey, and if Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid cannot return him to his Pro Bowl form, no one can. However, if they do, he will be a great value for the money.
Darius Slayton
A few years back, the Chiefs made a trade with the New York Giants for a wide receiver, but it did not work out. However, it might not be a bad idea if they contacted them again, this time regarding Darius Slayton. The five-year veteran has always been a reliable performer and would be a low-cost addition with great upside if paired with an outstanding quarterback.
Treylon Burks
Many first-round picks have failed to make an impact with their original teams before becoming stars elsewhere. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder possesses good size and enormous promise. The Chiefs have the benefit of having a top-tier quarterback who improves the performance of their teammates. If he can improve Burks’ game, they could end up with a legitimate WR1 prospect for a late-round pick in a trade.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling
It appears that the organization has avoided bringing back Marquez Valdes-Scantling. While he disappointed in 2023, he was solid for the squad two seasons ago, and if all else fails, bringing back a player who is familiar with the system is a reasonable option if no better alternatives emerge.
