Injuries Shake Up Florida State’s Projected Starting Lineup.
Florida State’s spring football momentum took a hit this week as multiple potential starters suffered injuries during practice sessions. The Seminoles, who are coming off a strong 2024 season and were expected to make another run at the College Football Playoff, now face early adversity with key players sidelined.
Head coach Mike Norvell confirmed that at least three projected starters sustained injuries that will likely impact their availability for the remainder of spring camp, and possibly into the early fall.
“We’ve had some unfortunate situations,” Norvell said during a post-practice press conference. “It’s always tough to see guys go down, especially those who have worked hard to earn their spot. But it’s also an opportunity for other players to step up.”
Among the most significant injuries is that of junior offensive tackle Marcus Henderson, who suffered what’s being reported as a lower leg injury. Henderson, a transfer from Memphis, had been penciled in as the starting left tackle and was expected to be a cornerstone of FSU’s offensive line. According to team sources, Henderson will undergo further evaluation this week, but early signs point to a potential long-term absence.
On the defensive side, redshirt sophomore linebacker Jaheim Simmons is also dealing with a high ankle sprain. Simmons was in line to take over the middle linebacker role after showing strong flashes last season. Though not believed to be season-threatening, high ankle sprains can be difficult to manage and often linger longer than expected.
Adding to the Seminoles’ injury woes, wide receiver Malik Benson tweaked his hamstring during a non-contact drill. Benson, who transferred from Alabama in the offseason, had been turning heads in camp with his speed and route-running. His injury is considered minor, but the team is taking a cautious approach to avoid further setbacks.
The recent spate of injuries comes at a critical time for Florida State as it continues to retool following the departure of several veterans to the NFL Draft. While the Seminoles still boast a deep roster, the loss of key contributors during spring can disrupt continuity and chemistry — especially at positions like offensive line and linebacker that require strong communication and cohesion.
Despite the setbacks, Norvell remains optimistic.
“We’ve built this program with depth in mind,” he said. “These moments test that depth and give us a chance to evaluate some of the younger guys and transfers who are hungry to make an impact.”
Players such as freshman tackle Elijah Moore, linebacker Blake Nichelson, and sophomore receiver Hykeem Williams are now expected to take on increased roles during the remainder of spring practices.
Florida State’s spring game, scheduled for April 20, will offer fans their first look at how the team is adapting to the early adversity. With expectations still sky-high for 2025, how the Seminoles handle this stretch could be a defining storyline heading into the summer.
