As Zakai Zeigler’s unforgettable career with the Tennessee Volunteers comes to a close, fans, teammates, and coaches alike are taking a moment to celebrate and thank one of the most accomplished players in program history. From his fiery leadership and defensive tenacity to his record-breaking playmaking, Zeigler leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in Rocky Top history.
Zeigler’s journey to All-American status was one built on heart, hustle, and unshakable determination. Despite being under-recruited out of high school, he quickly made an impact during his freshman season, earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. It didn’t take long for the SEC to take notice of the undersized guard who played with the heart of a giant.
Over the next three seasons, Zeigler continued to elevate his game, becoming a three-time All-SEC selection and an astonishing four-time member of the SEC All-Defensive Team. His tireless work on the defensive end also earned him the title of SEC Defensive Player of the Year twice, making him one of the most feared perimeter defenders in the country.
But Zakai wasn’t just a defensive wizard—he was the engine that powered Tennessee’s offense. He shattered the SEC single-season assist record and ended his career as the Tennessee program’s all-time assist leader with 747 assists. His court vision, quick first step, and uncanny ability to create for teammates made him one of the most dynamic point guards in college basketball.
In total, Zeigler scored 1,556 points, grabbed 356 rebounds, dished 747 assists, and collected 251 steals in his Tennessee career. Those numbers only tell part of the story. What can’t be measured is his leadership, his clutch performances, or the spark he brought every time he stepped on the court.
