In a recent NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 matchup, Arkansas Razorbacks head coach John Calipari faced criticism for a pivotal decision during the closing moments of the game against Texas Tech. The Razorbacks squandered a 13-point lead in the final five minutes, ultimately losing 85-83 in overtime. With 7.3 seconds remaining and Arkansas trailing by two, Calipari chose not to call a timeout, allowing play to continue. This led to guard DJ Wagner taking a contested jumper that missed, sealing the Razorbacks’ defeat. Reflecting on the decision, Calipari admitted, “Now, because it ended the way it did, yeah, I wish I would have called a timeout.”
This isn’t the first time Calipari has expressed regret over in-game decisions. In the 2017 NCAA Tournament, his Kentucky Wildcats faced North Carolina in the Elite Eight. After Malik Monk tied the game with a three-pointer, Calipari opted not to call a timeout, leading to a quick UNC score and a 75-73 loss for Kentucky. Post-game, Calipari acknowledged, “I wish I would have called a timeout.”
Similarly, in the 2015 Final Four, Kentucky’s undefeated season ended with a 71-64 loss to Wisconsin. Calipari later reflected on his decision to keep Andrew and Aaron Harrison on the floor during critical moments despite their struggles, citing loyalty as a factor. He admitted that inserting Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis might have changed the outcome.
These instances highlight the complexities coaches face during high-stakes games. Calipari’s reflections underscore the delicate balance between trusting players and making strategic adjustments. As he continues his tenure with Arkansas, these experiences may influence his future decision-making in crucial game moments.
