Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the ATP Finals group stage and has now shifted his attention to Rafael Nadal.
After being knocked from the ATP Finals in the group stage, Carlos Alcaraz is setting his sights on an emotional Davis Cup farewell for compatriot Rafael Nadal – and is anxious to win a title for his compatriot at his final tournament.
Despite winning two Grand Slam championships this year, Alcaraz was defeated by Alexander Zverev 7-6 (5) 6-4, with his fate confirmed when Casper Ruud triumphed over Andrey Rublev, claiming the second slot in their group.
Alcaraz’s performance in Turin had been affected by illness, but his early departure will give him plenty of time to prepare for Spain’s Davis Cup match against the Netherlands in Malaga on Tuesday – a game fraught with emotion as Nadal prepares to retire from tennis.
“I’ll be able to be next to him in the last moments on a tennis court for him,” claimed Alcaraz.
“But I believe it is most crucial for Rafa, for his final event. I sincerely hope he retires with a title. It will be an extremely emotional and memorable tournament for me.”
Zverev has excelled alongside Jannik Sinner as this week’s top performers at the ATP Finals, earning his position ahead of Alcaraz in the standings come year’s conclusion. In the first set against Zverev, Alcaraz fought hard to save seven break points, including a set opportunity at 5-6.
Zverev won a tough tie-break against Alcaraz, despite a wobbly moment while leading 5-2, and clinched victory after Alcaraz threw his racket into his towel in despair.
Following his win, Zverev said: “He beat me too many times this year in important matches, so I’m happy that I got this one.”
“Obviously, I think we have a very strong rivalry and a wonderful friendship, so it’s always fun to play against him. He’s a fantastic guy, and I’m looking forward to our next matches together.”
Looking ahead, Zverev will face Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals, and he stated: “I’m pleased to be 3-0 in the group, but I believe the semi-finals will be extremely difficult. (Fritz) has defeated me several times at the Slams, so I’m looking forward to that match.”
Meanwhile, Ruud has secured a berth in the final four by overcoming Rublev, setting up a meeting with Sinner.
