Birmingham City advanced to the second round of the FA Cup thanks to a goal from Willum Willumsson against their non-league opponents.
Chris Davies believed Birmingham City were significantly superior to their FA Cup opponents Sutton United at the VBS Community Stadium.
Blues advance to the second round of the FA Cup after dominating possession and territory but scoring only one goal.
Davies said that left them open to a late sucker punch, with Ashley Naseden having an excellent chance to equalise late on, but overall, he was relieved to have survived.
“We’ve had a similar to the Mansfield game I suppose, we wanted that second goal to open up a bit of a margin,” the Blues coach stated.
“I think I’d give the players credit for their performance because it’d be arrogant to expect it to be simple.
“I believe we controlled the game, and we appeared to be in control defensively, but that little bit of movement, quality, inventiveness, and combination in the final third was lacking today – but they had a lot of bodies back there, making it difficult for us.
“But don’t take anything away from the final outcome; it was never going to be simple in my opinion. Having to play extra time would have been disheartening, and we should not allow games in which we are far, far, far superior to the opposition to come down to a penalty call that could affect the outcome since we were miles ahead.
“I believe the guys wanted a little more. They would have preferred to be two or three up because our play and control earned it. But it’s something for us to think about. How can we provide more clear opportunities in instances like this?
“Even at one-nil, you expect the opposition to come out and open the game up, but there was no open game throughout the 94 minutes; it was a completely closed game.”
“They were playing the same way even when they were down 1-0, which is perfectly great and their prerogative. However, it increases congestion, necessitating the development of better alternatives.
